A **Business Process** is an entity within the [[Foundation (CSDM domain)|Foundation domain]] of the [[Common Service Data Model|Common Service Data Model]] (CSDM), a reference architecture developed by [[ServiceNow|ServiceNow]] that provides prescriptive guidance on service-related definitions and data modeling within the ServiceNow AI Platform. A Business Process represents a method of related steps that stakeholders take to achieve a business goal, serving as a manually maintained [[Configuration item|configuration item]] that can identify criticality, both declared and determined, as well as impact to confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
Business Processes are recorded in the cmdb_ci_business_process table and may be organized in a parent/child hierarchy using the parent attribute. The review frequency of a Business Process can be set to Monthly, Quarterly, Semi Annual/Half Yearly, Annually, or none, with a next review date specified. Business Processes can be mapped to [[Value Stream Stage (CSDM)|Value Stream Stages]] through [[Value Stream to Process (CSDM)|Value Stream Process]] using the "Operationalizes::Operationalized by" [[CMDB relationship|CMDB relationship]], enabling organizations to relate value delivery to operational execution. Business Processes follow the [[Document Life Cycle Process (CSDM)|Document Life Cycle Process (CSDM)]] with stages including Ideation, Operational, and End of Life. With [[Enterprise Architecture (ServiceNow)|Enterprise Architecture]], organizations can visually design and commit Business Process data models using Enterprise Modeling and Visualization. Note that the singular reference from [[Business Application (CSDM)|Business Application (CSDM)]] to Business Process is considered legacy in CSDM 5, with other options available that allow one-to-many relationships.
