A **CMDB Group** is an entity within the [[Foundation (CSDM domain)|Foundation domain]] of the [[Common Service Data Model|Common Service Data Model]] (CSDM), a reference architecture developed by [[ServiceNow|ServiceNow]] that provides prescriptive guidance on service-related definitions and data modeling within the ServiceNow AI Platform. A CMDB Group represents a collection of [[Configuration item|configuration items]] based on saved Query Builder queries, encoded queries, or manually added CIs, enabling useful groupings of CIs that can be used throughout the ServiceNow AI Platform. CMDB Groups are recorded in the cmdb_group table and are not configuration items. A CMDB Group can contain one or more saved queries from Query Builder, encoded queries, or manually populated CIs, providing organizations with a method to replace spreadsheet-based CI groupings where automated solutions are not yet available. CMDB Groups serve as the reference object on [[Dynamic CI Group (CSDM)|Dynamic CI Groups]] to provide one or more queries that identify CIs making up a desired grouping. Note that a CMDB Group contains CIs but cannot contain other groups. The purpose of the CMDB Group is to enable useful groupings for various use cases including query-based [[Application Service (CSDM)|Application Services]], managed groups of infrastructure for [[Technology Management Service Offering (CSDM)|Technology Management Service Offerings]], and patch management for [[Change management (ITSM)|Change]] processes. ServiceNow recommends early consideration of how to report on and monitor CIs to help in creating CMDB Groups across the [[CSDM Service Life Cycle|CSDM Service Life Cycle]].
