A **Service Instance** is an entity within the [[Service Delivery (CSDM domain)|Service Delivery domain]] of the [[Common Service Data Model|Common Service Data Model]] (CSDM), a reference architecture developed by [[ServiceNow|ServiceNow]] that provides prescriptive guidance on service-related definitions and data modeling within the ServiceNow AI Platform. A Service Instance represents the instantiation of a service, with [[Application Service (CSDM)|Application Service]] being the original and most established type. In CSDM 5, ServiceNow relabeled the cmdb_ci_service_auto table to Service Instance and introduced additional sibling types to accommodate expanded use of services beyond traditional application deployments.
Service Instances are operational [[Configuration item|configuration items]] used for impact analysis in [[Incident management (ITSM)|Incident]], [[Problem management|Problem]], and [[Change management (ITSM)|Change]] processes. Instances may be designated by environment (Development, Test, Production) or by region, line of business, or other criteria. CSDM 5 introduces several new Service Instance types as siblings to Application Service: [[Data (AI) Service Instance (CSDM)|Data Service Instance]] for data and AI services, [[Connection Service Instance (CSDM)|Connection Service Instance (CSDM)]] for logical or physical network connections, [[Network Service Instance (CSDM)|Network Service Instance (CSDM)]] for network services based on Network Functions, [[Facility Service Instance (CSDM)|Facility Service Instance (CSDM)]] for building operations services, and [[Operational Process Service Instance (CSDM)|Operational Process Service Instance (CSDM)]] for industrial or utility operational processes. As of CSDM 5, there is no user interface for creating and managing the new Service Instance types; they are provided as a data model only requiring manual creation and maintenance, and are not part of Event Impact Analysis.
